Depends. Did you tell 'em your full name is Christopher Robin Todd? (A Blackstuff reference and no mistake.)
I've done this. Er, not the Christopher Robin Todd bit. And I expect it doesn't to help to tell you that I felt bad doing it. Six weeks it lasted, and though you know this is precisely why there is such a thing as the dole, you know you're paying for it every time you cough up your taxes, there is still an enormous relief when you can walk away.
So I understand how you feel and I wish you a quick walk away. But in the meantime, I say it again, the dole is a service and a laudable one. It's just so close to doldrums.
Unavoidable necessity. I'd been doing software development contracts in between stretches of writing full-time, but the people who were giving me the contracts have run out of money. I hope it won't take me too long to find something else, but you never can tell with job searches. Especially when techie companies start asking awkward questions about my long-term career goals. "No Mr Hiring Manager, I don't ever want to make my living from writing. Whatever gave you that idea?"

Been there, done that, never going back.
Hopefully.
Is this a career choice or an unavoidable necessity?
